Un día de noviembre de 1977 los Buzzcocks se encontraban en la sala de televisión de una casa de huéspedes en Edimburgo, Escocia y veían el musical Guys & Dolls. La línea "Have you ever fallen in love with someone you shouldn't have" contenida en los diálogos inspiró la canción. Al día siguiente Pete Shelley escribió la letra y la música.

Como la mayoría de las canciones de los Buzzcocks, es una combinación de energía instrumental, agresividad rítmica, cinismo lírico y melodía pop. Es su canción más conocida y muchas bandas han hecho covers de ella y se le ha incluido en el juego “Rock Band”.
